Venetian-themed Arabian souk
Word to the wise: Cocoa lovers should seek out Choco-La. Truffles come fresh from the Shangri-La Hotel kitchen and everything’s made with Grand Cru, the best chocolate in Switzerland.
The Qaryat Al Beri Souk’s atmosphere is hard to beat. Situated amidst a glittering network of Venetian-style waterways, the sprawling two-storey market is best approached by abra (think a gondola, Arabian-style).
Despite all the traditional flourishes - arched windows and oud-scented corridors - the place has the trademark sheen of a new development. The bazaar has an incongruous mix of traditional apparel, upmarket lingerie (care of Le Perla) and antiques, and while the shops do attract their fair share of paying customers, it’s the fine dining, al fresco views and happening nightspots that keep this place busy.
