Los Angeles, the city of angels, that is, if those angels drove expensive cars, lived on sushi and Starbucks, and got their stylist to pick up a new pair of wings from Rodeo Drive. This is the LA of our collective cinematic conscious that we see splashed pantiless on the front cover of tabloid rags, or sold to us in high definition hopes from advertising billboards.
Nowhere in the world are you more bombarded with false desires to be thinner, richer, firmer, faster and more beautiful; but this plastic fantastic LA is no fiction. Just drive down Wilshire Boulevard or Sunset Strip, and there it is flashing in your face.
But there is another side to this gargantuan city. Just like the many movies set in its midst from 'Clueless' to 'Crash', it has many faces. Head to the once-shunned streets of Downtown where an edgy urban art scene has taken hold; or out to the land of independent record stores and counter culture cool bars of Silver Lake and Los Feliz. The beaches from Venice to Malibu are as much for the surf dudes as they are for the celebrities, and neighbouring the chintzy commercialism of the Grove in Hollywood is the hispanic culture on the streets of Pico-Union.
In a city where almost everyone comes from somewhere else, a visitor can dive head first into the heady pool of LA life, indulging in some of North America's best drinking and dining, and basking in the ever glorious golden weather of the sunshine state.
