Quick facts

KOM HOTEL STOCKHOLM

Arlanda Airport

Sweden's largest airport just outside the city
Talk of the town: At the entrance to Arlanda, there is 747 jumbo jet that has been converted into a hostel.

Word to the wise: Make sure you purchase tickets for the express bus ahead of time; you can't buy them on the bus.

Arlanda is Stockholm's efficient, clean and cozy airport, and also Sweden’s largest. And like everything in Sweden, getting to and from is made effortlessly simple by express trains and buses, public transportation and taxis.

The Arlanda Express train is the easiest way to get to and from Arlanda. This high-speed, non-stop train trip takes only 20 minutes to and from Stockholm's Central Station and costs SEK 260.

You can also hop on an express bus run by either Flygbussarna or Swebus. It takes you to and from the bus terminal at the Central Station in about 45 minutes for SEK 99.

Another option is to take a taxi. The benefit is its ease and comfort, and the disadvantage is the price. A one-way ride will cost around SEK 400-600.

Bicycle riding

See Stockholm the way the locals do... on a bike
Word to the wise: Stockholm City Bikes offers good deals on three-day and seasonal cards. Buy it at most subway stations or check with your hotel, many of which sell it.

Stockholm is one of the most bike-friendly cities in Europe with designated bike lanes throughout the city, and is the chosen method of transport for many locals after the snow melts.

Breezing along on two wheels is the best way to see Stockholm - when the weather cooperates. You can see the farthest reaches of Djurgården, head to northern Stockholm and experience the exquisite Haga Park, and explore the little side streets and residential areas that tourists generally miss.

City Bikes has cycle stands located around the city where you can borrow bikes, though you can only ride for three hours. If you want to keep riding, just grab a new one. You can also rent bikes along Strandvägen for the whole day or take a guided bike tour around the city.
Address: Rent a Bike: Strandvägen, Kajplats 18
Bike Sweden: Narvavägen 13-17
Opening Hours: City Bikes: Apr-Oct, loan bikes Mon–Sun: 6am - 10pm, return anytime
Rent a Bike: May-Sep, Mon-Sun: 10am - 6pm

Buses

See the whole city from a comfy seat on Stockholm's buses
Word to the wise: The number 69 or 69K bus takes you past many of the city's best sites. The easiest place to pick it up is at Centralen or in front of Dramaten.

The bus system in Stockholm is as efficient, if not more so, than any other in the world. Look for the red and white signs or the semi-enclosed glass booths that mark the bus stations. Posted information tells you which buses stop there and at what times, but unfortunately not the bus stops, so just ask a friendly local.

Tickets are valid on all public transport in Stockholm including buses, trains and some boats. You can purchase them at any Pressbyrån or 7-Eleven in the city (SL cards are sold at Pressbyråns in subway stations); only single tickets (SEK 36) and refills are sold at the machines.

If you're in town for at least a few days, these are probably the best tickets for you:

- 24-hour unlimited ticket: SEK 115
- 72-hour unlimited ticket: SEK 230
- Strip with 16 coupons, valid for 8 trips in the city center: SEK 200
- 7-day unlimited ticket: SEK 300

City

See how the locals live, shop and work in Stockholm
Word to the wise: Skip breakfast and head to one of the many Grillen kiosks to get tunnbrödsrulle. It is classic Swedish and a strangely delicious combination of hot dog, mashed potatoes and shrimp salad.

This is the heart of Stockholm and where most city dwellers shop, eat and work. And Sergels Torg, with its glass obelisk and water fountain, is the center of it all. Kulturhuset, located in the roundabout, is a great place to catch a movie or grab a latte. Just east is Hamngatan where you can shop all the way to the harbor, going past Nordiska Kompaniet, a huge department store with more than 100 shops and Swedish cinnamon buns to die for.

To the north is Sveavägen, a stroll up which will bring you to Hötorget, which boasts a lively square where fruit and flower sellers will yell deals at you. And to the west of Sergels Torg is Drottninggatan, the long, touristy, pedestrian-only shopping street that stretches into Old Town. You'll find H&M's world headquarters here as well as Sweden's famous Åhléns department store. The closer you get to Old Town, you'll find more souvenir shops hawking Swedish-themed everything.
Opening Hours: Stores, Mon-Fri: 10am - 7pm
Sat: 10am - 5pm
Sun: 12noon - 5pm

Kungsholmen

A more authentic Stockholm among the locals on Kungsholmen
Word to the wise: For a scenic stroll, walk down the stairs from S:t Eriksbron and then head west along the water.

Talk of the town: About 80 percent of apartments are occupied by one person, making it the most singleton-dense island.

Kungsholmen is a big, lively island to the west of the city center with beautiful walking paths, great shops, and popular restaurants and bars. It is a great destination for those wanting to escape the tourist traps and see how Stockholmers live and play.

The island used to be populated by older people, but in recent years the younger set has supplanted them and breathed new life into the island. Check out the lively bars and restaurants along Scheelegatan or if the sun is out, head to Norr Mälarstand where the crowds will be.

If you favor a calmer jaunt around the island, stick by the water. The walking path along Norr Mälarstand, stretching from City Hall to Rålambshovsparken, offers great views. If your feet aren't aching, keep walking around Kungsholmen. In summer, head to Rålambshovsparken where you can join the locals, who pack the park from noon to night socializing and sunbathing.
Address: Kungsholmen

Metro

Efficient and timely underground transport around Stockholm
Word to the wise: Purchase tickets at the Pressbyråns in each subway station. There are also machines near the subway turnstiles where you can buy single tickets.

Stockholm's 'tunnelbana', or subway, is such an easy and relaxed way of getting around the city; train times are displayed, cars are clean and many underground stations feature local art.

The system has three zones, though you're most likely to only travel in the first zone. You can spot the many stations by their easily recognizable white circular signs with a blue, capital T.

Tickets are valid on all public transport in Stockholm including buses, trains and some boats. You can purchase single tickets for SEK 36, but if you're in town for at least a few days, one of these might suit you better:

- 24-hour unlimited ticket: SEK 115
- 72-hour unlimited ticket: SEK 230
- Strip for 16 trips: SEK 200
- 7-day unlimited ticket: SEK 300

Old Town

A charming glimpse into Stockholm's mid-13th century beginnings
Word to the wise: Avoid Västerlånggatan, Stockholm's biggest tourist trap. Instead, stroll along the parallel street Prästgatan or Västerlånggatan's cousin, Österlånggatan.

Old Town is Stockholm's original city center and was founded in 1252. The old, tilting buildings and the narrow cobblestone streets throw you back hundreds of years. The streets are packed with tourists, especially in summer, so veer off into the side streets.

History abounds here: see the Royal Palace and the city's oldest building, the Stockholm Cathedral; stand where 80 noblemen were beheaded by a Danish King in 1520 on Stortorget; and see a Viking runestone on Prästgatan.

If your belly starts to grumble, grab a scoop at an ice cream shop or stop at one of the many cafes for 'fika', a break in the afternoon to drink coffee and eat 'kanelbulle', a traditional cinnamon bun.

From 1-24 December you can visit Mäster Olofsgården's Advent calendar, a local tradition. At 6pm daily, a window opens at Svartmangatan 6 and a 15-minute performance entertains the frozen crowd below.
Address: Gamla Stan

Östermalm

Stockholms most exclusive neighborhood with great dining and shopping
Word to the wise: Pop by Saluhallen and have a wander around. If you're peckish, go to the back and get the best Toast Skagen in the city.

Östermalm is Stockholm's most upscale neighborhood; it is home to the the biggest luxury brands, upscale restaurants and bars, and some of the most expensive real estate in Sweden.

In Stureplan you'll find Stockholm's finest restaurants and nightclubs, while the many shops around Biblioteksgatan promise to keep you occupied for hours. The pedestrian-only walkways around Sturegallerian will take you past beautiful outdoor cafes and restaurants, and will eventually lead you to the quieter, residential neighborhoods further east.

Head to Östermalmstorg and grab a drink at one of the outdoor restaurants in the summertime, and afterwards pop into Östermalm's Saluhall, the city's oldest gourmet food market. If cash is not in high supply, take a leisurely walk along Strandvägen and admire the priciest real estate in Sweden. Or head up to the Royal Institute of Technology, known as KTH, and wander around the beautiful campus.
KOM HOTEL STOCKHOLM

Södermalm

Stockholm's arty and cultural island
Word to the wise: Head to Fjällgatan, known as 'The Window of Stockholm', for incredible views of almost the entire city.

Södermalm used to be a poor island where the laborers lived, but these days it is the art and cultural center of Stockholm. Visit this island if you want to hang out among the artists and writers of the city, and visit the island's unparalleled vintage boutiques, clubs, cafes and restaurants.

Try Götgatan to shop for Swedish high-street brands and high-end designers, while SoFo, which stands for 'South of Folkungagatan', is good for vintage boutiques. Mariatorget is home to Hotel Rival, a hotel with a cafe, bakery and restaurant, which is owned by former ABBA member Benny Andersson.

If a walk is what you fancy, go to Söder Mälarstrand along the water and enjoy the views of City Hall and Kungsholmen. And if you'd like to experience Södermalm's roots, wander the small streets around Fjällgatan near Katarina Church.

The Stockholm Card

See all of Stockholm's best sights and navigate the city with one card
Word to the wise: If you plan on packing your visit with lots of attractions and touring then its worth it, but if you want a more relaxed trip it's a bit pricey.

Make a list of all the sights you want to see on your trip to Stockholm and forget about the ticket costs adding up. With The Stockholm Card, you can get into 80 of the city's museums and attractions, get unlimited travel on buses, subways and trams, take a bicycle tour, see the city on the sightseeing boats and get bonus offers on hop-on-hop-off buses, among other discounts.

You can choose from a 1, 2, 3 or 5-day card. They also offer cards for children (ages 7-17). Purchase the card at Arlanda Airport, any subway station, many hotels and hostels, or the Stockholm Tourist Center across the street from Central Station. You can also purchase the card online and either have it delivered to your home or pick it up at the tourist center.

Vasastan

Lots of personality in this popular residential neighborhood
Word to the wise: For a special meal, book a table at Wasahof on Saturday around 8pm. They have live opera and moules frites to die for.

Vasastan largely lacks any traditional tourist attractions making it a great place to grab a bite to eat or enjoy a drink. This neighborhood is equally populated by the young and old, with a particularly high number of latte moms enjoying their 14 months of maternity leave.

Rörstrandsgatan, close to S:t Eriksplan, is the street to hit for chilled out eateries, cafes and bars. It has the highest density of restaurants of any street, offering all types of food. Don't miss the Japanese restaurant RAW and Mellqvist Coffee Bar.

Vasastan is also home to some stunning parks. Vasa Park has an ice skating rink in winter - if you can handle the crowd of budding ice hockey players. In Observatorielunden, a fascinating old observatory sits perched on the hill. If you plan ahead, Karlbergs Strand by the water is the perfect picnic spot.

Odenplan is the center here; visit the beautiful Gustav Vasa Kyrka built in 1906, or the fantastic circular city library.

Canal Tours

Save your feet and see beautiful Stockholm from the water
Word to the wise: Get away from the tourist attractions and take the Under the Bridges tour; you'll see city suburbs and go through the two biggest locks connecting Lake Malaren and the Baltic.

There are at least half a dozen different boat rides around Stockholm and all of them offer a relaxing ride and pretty incredible views of the city.

The Royal Canal Tour takes you around the island of Djurgården and shows you the greener parts of the city. You'll see enormous mansions, some popular landmarks and the most beautiful parkland in the city.

The Historical Canal Tour, which departs from City Hall and takes you around the largest island of Kungsholmen, is chock full of history about the city and how the landscape has changed over the years.

If you've planned your trip in winter, fear not. There is a lovely Winter Tour that takes you through the unfrozen main waterways and around the island of Fjäderholmarna, just past Djurgården. You can even buy some glögg, a hot Swedish mulled wine, to warm up.
Address: Nybrokajen, Strömkajen or Stadshusbron

Opening Hours: Check the website for each tour because some operate for only part of the year.

Drottningholm Palace

See how the Swedish royals live on Lake Malaren
Word to the wise: Take a summer stroll through the magnificent, Versailles-inspired gardens out back. If you can handle a hike, head to the strangely out-of-place Chinese Pavilion past the garden maze.

Drottningholm is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is where the Swedish royal family call home (you'll know they're there when the Swedish flag is up). It is the most well preserved 16th century palace in Sweden and its stunning architecture and French gardens attract thousands of tourists each year.

Take a free guided tour through the palace and see the secret doors that connected the bedrooms of the royals, the stunning white and gold library with about 2,000 books, and the tapestries that depict the tragic love story of Hero and Leander.

If you're up for a bit more history, see the theater next to the palace, which dates back to 1766. It is where King Gustaf III wrote and acted in plays (and was generally regarded as rubbish at both). Today, the theater hosts the annual summer Opera Festival.

Fotografiska - Photo Museum

World-class photography in a world-class setting
Word to the wise: Grab a coffee and pastry at the cafe upstairs and see Stockholm through the windows, which used to be the loading doors at this former customs house.

This young museum has cultivated a loyal following in the short time it has been open and is known for its well curated shows and impecable taste. The museum is housed in a beautiful brick art nouveau building dating back to 1906.

The museum hosts four major exhibitions and about 20 smaller ones each year featuring well-known photographers from all over the world. Notable past exhibits have ranged from Nick Brandt's enigmatic animal shots to celebrity portraits by Anton Corbijn.

The gift shop in the lobby is definitely worth a visit; it has an impressive collection of beautiful coffee table books on art and culture, as well as poster reproductions of the museum's most famous works.

Gröna Lund

Sweden's oldest amusement park
Word to the wise: Jump on the Free Fall for a beautiful, if brief, view of Stockholm from 80 meters up.

Gröna Lund, or "Grönan", is Sweden's oldest amusement park and enjoys a prime location by the water on the island of Djurgården. This nearly 130-year-old park is small in comparison to others, but it is packed with about 30 rides, 20 games and several restaurants and food stands.

Grönan's weekly concerts bring in some big Swedish and international artists and are popular with locals. Bob Marley holds the record for the most attendees with 32,000 people at his 1980 concert.

The park just opened a seventh roller coaster called the Twister. This wooden coaster can be found near the new carnival-style boardwalk and behind Blå Tåget (The Ghost Train), a ride that dates back to 1935.

You get free admission with the Stockholm Card, unless it's a concert night when fees are a bit higher. After admission is paid, you still have to pay to use the rides. Unlimited tickets are available.

Opening Hours: 7 May-25 Sep, times vary but generally Mon-Sun: 12noon - 10pm (check the website for more information)

Haga Park

A stunning, leafy oasis in northern Stockholm
Word to the wise: There is a free audio guide available for those who want to know more about the royal buildings. Click on the web page link.

Talk of the town: If you're lucky, you might see the Swedish crown princess, who lives in Haga Palace.

Haga Park is a popular haven for stressed out Stockholmers - in the summer it is packed with nature lovers hiking, walking or just enjoying a picnic in the sun. The park is part of the Royal National City Park, the first national urban park in the world, and it is Sweden's best "Gustavian Park", a type of English landscape park founded on the initiative of King Gustav III. It is also home to many native animals, including fox, badger and deer.

It's quite easy to spend a whole day here; start your day by having some brunch at Stallmästaregården, a popular restaurant and hotel from the 1600s. Then work off those calories with some outdoor tennis, swimming or kayaking. You can also admire the historical royal buildings in the park as four of the 11 royal palaces in Stockholm are here.

Ice skating

Embrace the cold and ice by strapping on a pair of skates
Word to the wise: Locals skate and ski on the canals and waterways that freeze in winter, but avoid being so bold. It's hard to know where the ice is thick enough.

If you plan your visit to Stockholm during winter, why not embrace our proximity to the Arctic by ice skating. There are several great parks with free ice skating rinks. Kungsträdgården has a small rink and offers skate rentals as well as a great atmosphere; there are loads of stands with hot drinks and goodies. Vasa Park also has a great artificially frozen rink, but you'll have to bring your own skates.

If you're feeling more adventurous, book a long-distance guided skate outing on the natural ice of Stockholm's waterways. Iceguide provides five- to nine-hour guided skating tours, complete with safety equipment and instruction. They only offer tours after 1 January on Saturdays and Sundays.

Kayaking

Rest your weary feet and see Stockholm from the water
Word to the wise: Try to avoid renting a kayak when it's windy out; the currents are strong and even worse in inclement weather.

Stockholm has a law that it must maintain a ratio of 1/3 buildings, 1/3 parks and 1/3 water, and what better way to enjoy the latter than to jump into a kayak and see the city at sea level.

You'll see why Stockholm is called the 'Venice of the North' if you paddle your kayak around the city's quiet canals. You can also kayak out to the archipelago with its 24,000 islands - just stay close to land and watch out for those cruise ships.

Kulturhuset

Take in a photo exhibit or a film on a rainy day at Kulturhuset
Word to the wise: Get an overview of the city you're in - literally. Check out the model of Stockholm on the ground floor and plot your next move.

Stockholm's Kulturhuset, or Culture House, always has a packed calendar of events that includes films, debates, theater, photo exhibitions, dance and art. The building, completed in 1974, has sparked some controversy; its detractors think it is a massive eyesore and dislike the modernism it represents in Stockholm.

Despite the controversy, more than three million people visited Kulturhuset last year, and its no surprise once you pop in; it is a hub of activity with friends, couples and families packing all floors. Check out their website to see what they have planned, or just pop in to have a coffee or some lunch. If you feel like some fresh air, head to the terrace on the roof where can you grab a bite to eat.

Kungliga Dramatiska Theatern

Stunning architecture and classical drama
Word to the wise: Have lunch, dinner or drinks on the upper terrace during the summer and enjoy the harbor views and people watching.

The Royal Dramatic Theater is Sweden’s national stage for drama. The stunning architecture and iconic golden statues date from the theater’s opening in 1908. Since then, the theater has hosted performances from famed Swedish actors like Greta Garbo and directors like Ingmar Bergman. Dramaten, as it is called locally, hosts about 1,000 performances each year of international and Swedish dramas, including Shakespeare and Ibsen.

If taking in a show is not in your plans, have lunch at one of the theater's three restaurants or enjoy the building’s beautiful architecture. Before you go, don’t forget to touch the belly of famed Swedish actress Margaretha Krook; her statue stands at the corner of the building and is heated perfectly to body temperature.

Monteliusvägen

Be transported back in time with this walk high above Stockholm
Word to the wise: Plan to have dinner in Södermalm and take an after-dinner walk to Monteliusvägen just as the sun is setting to see Stockholm at its most beautiful.

This stunning route, named after a city curator and architect, is an ideal way to get a birds-eye view of the city and to experience a bit of its 18th and 19th century history.

This walking path sits high up on the cliffs of Södermalm and offers unparalleled views of Old Town, Riddarholmen, City Hall and Lake Malaren. You can also absorb some of the area's rich history; the houses here date back to the 18th century and used to be occupied by the laborers in Stockholm.

Getting here is a bit tricky, but you'll see the view as you get closer. Get off the subway at Mariatorget and walk west on Hornsgatan until you reach Torkel Knutssonsgatan. Make a right and watch for Bastugatan, which kicks slightly off to the right. Meander down Bastugatan until you see a daycare on the left; Monteliusvägen is just past it along the cliff edge.

Skansen

Swedish culture at the world's oldest outdoor museum
Word to the wise: Buy a traditional Swedish treat at the bakery, which is housed in a building from Södermalm that dates to the 1870s. Cash only.

Skansen is mini-Sweden: Swedish houses, animals, plants, culture, food, handicrafts and traditions are all here. The museum was created in 1891 to preserve Swedish heritage at a time when the industrial revolution threatened to snuff much of it out.

The museum, which opened in 1891, has expanded over the years and now encompasses about 300,000 square meters of land, which includes historic houses that have been relocated here; a zoo with Nordic animals like the bear, wolf and harbor seal, and a series of events that commemorate traditional Swedish holidays like Midsummer in June and the Lucia Festival on 13 December.

The museum does an excellent job of showing the living history of Swedish life and nature as it was from the 18th century. Employees of Skansen even dress up in period costume and wander around the museum.

Storkyrkan - Stockholm Cathedral

Imagine a royal wedding inside Stockholm's oldest building
Word to the wise: Take a peek inside to see the renovations made before the June 2010 wedding between the heir, Crown Princes Victoria, and her former personal trainer Daniel Westling.

Storkyrkan, or Stockholm Cathedral, is the oldest building in Stockholm, dating back to the late 13th century. These days it looks nothing like the original; the exterior was given a Baroque makeover in the mid-18th century to please annoyed citizens, who hated its middle-ages look.

The building is historically the site where King Gustaf Vasa, widely regarded as the father of Sweden, was persuaded to change the national religion from Catholic to Protestant in 1527. Since 1942, it has been the mother church of the Stockholm diocese, and it offers regular services, concerts and the occasional royal wedding (the current King and Queen were also married here in 1976).

Inside you can see the impressive oak statue of St. George and the Dragon, which represents a Swedish victory in one of its many battles with Denmark.

The City Hall

Seat of Stockholm's government and site of the annual Nobel dinner and gala
Word to the wise: Book a table at City Hall's Cellar Restaurant and eat the same dinner as the Nobel Prize winners on the same china. You can even specify any menu from any year since 1901.

Stockholm's City Hall is the seat of the city's government and houses the offices of about 200 politicians. Its Blue Hall is the site where about 1,300 guests, including Nobel laureates, the royal family, politicians and honored guests, gather for the annual Nobel banquet and gala on 10 December.

The building is a widely recognized symbol of Stockholm, with its eight million bricks and three golden crowns at the top, which are rumored to each be the size of a small Volkswagen. It was opened in 1923 and boasts stunning views of Old Town, Riddarholmen and the city's largest island, Södermalm.

The City Hall has two main rooms: the Blue Hall, which is actually beautiful red brick; and the Golden Hall, which illustrates Sweden's history with 18 million pieces of gold mosaic. To see these rooms and the rest of the building, you'll need to take a guided tour.

The Opera

Sweden's national stage for opera and ballet
Noteworthy for: The magnificent gold foyer greets you with its golden walls, opulent mirrors and crystal chandeliers.

This beautiful building is the birthplace of Swedish opera and is the national stage for opera and ballet. The baroque building, opened in 1898, hosts 350 performances during the season, which runs from late August to late June.

King Gustaf III, a lover of music and art, built the first opera on this foundation in 1782. Unfortunately, he was shot here at a masquerade ball less than 10 years after its opening and died shortly afterwards. Performers and Opera employees say they have seen the ghost of Gustaf III; according to the legend, he returns each year on March 16, the anniversary of his death.

The stunning main stage has three tiers and seats more than 1,000 people. Come take a look for yourself - book a guided tour in the summer and learn about the theater's history, life backstage and to peek into the orchestra pit.

The Royal Palace

A working palace with a facinating history
Word to the wise: The palace's north wall survived a devastating fire and dates back to the 13th century. Head to the Charles 11th Gallery room to see two small squares that show the castle's original color.

This 600-room palace in Old Town is one of the largest and most used in Europe. The king, queen and heir to the throne Crown Princess Victoria work here daily, and it is where the royal family entertains. It is also their official residence, though they've chosen the quieter country setting of Drottningholm Palace for everyday living.

The palace dates back to 1754 and is built on the foundation of the Three Crowns Castle, which was destroyed by a fire in 1697. Take a guided tour and ask the friendly guides your quirky questions, like what the king and queen are really like; they'll tell you. And don't miss the over-the-top, musical parade that is the changing of the guards from April to August at 12.15pm on weekdays and 1.15pm on Sundays.

Popular plate: Book a table at Sandhamns Värdshus and enjoy the harbor view and the quintessentially Swedish smoked salmon plate.

Stockholm's archipelago has a staggering 24,000 islands extending into the Baltic Sea and is the 'it' place for the city's elite to spend their summers. Houses out here cost a pretty penny, but you'll enjoy picking out your dream house on the boat ride out.

If you have a bit more time, take the 2 1/2-hour boat ride out to Sandhamn, one of the most popular islands and one of the last in the archipelago. The walking is great; you can meander in between the typical red and white Swedish houses and admire the massive yachts parked in the harbor.

Spy Bar

Late-night hipster hangout for music lovers and scene stealers
Word to the wise: Get here before 1am on the weekends, otherwise it is impossible to get in - unless you're a celebrity or know the doorman.

Put on your best duds and your most charming smile to get in; you'll need it. This wildly popular club, once a regular hangout for businessmen and blondes, is now crowded with hipsters, media execs and music lovers. It's usually the last stop of the night for Stockholm's hard partiers - the atmosphere is at its best between 3 and 5am.

The place is well guarded but it is worth the wait. High ceilings and crystal chandeliers adorn the crowded rooms. Be on the lookout for celebrities as well as your tab. This place is pricey and the staff are pretentious.

The terrace outside is open most of the year and is a popular place to have drinks, especially after dinner and into the night. There are three different bars at Sturehof, each of which offers a different atmosphere with music late.

Obaren is the crowded club upstairs that specializes in live music performed by well-known and not-so-well-known artists. Past guests have included the Latin Kings and Chris Cornell.

Located on a quieter street close to Stureplan, the bar at the Story Hotel effortlessly blends modern and vintage to give it a jazzy and Parisian atmosphere.

The long bar is a popular haunt for the after work crowd, but come Thursday the DJs take over and so do the weekend revelers. Take your seat beside media heavyweights, grab a drink or even a bite off the generous bar menu. You can also visit their relaxing backyard in the summertime.

Trädgården

A concrete garden bar under a Södermalm bridge
Word to the wise: Games always make the night better so challenge your friends to a ping pong duel or a boule battle royal.

In mid-May each year, Trädgården opens to a loyal crowd clamoring to spend another summer drinking under the Skanstull bridge. As bars go in Stockholm, this one is unique; it lays next to an old construction site and is hard to find. But once you spy that gate and enter, you'll know it was well worth it.

There is usually a lively DJ playing pop, rock, techno and hip hop, while patrons sit on a smattering of mismatched sofas and pillow-lined wooden benches. If you're hungry, grab their special burger at the grill; you won't be sorry.

Welcome to Stockholm

Stockholm is one of Europe's most beautiful capital cities, its pastel-hued 19th century architecture butting up against the clean, graceful waterways that stream past the city's 14 islands. The calm and easygoing inhabitants are part of the more than 750-year living history, with the city's oldest island, Gamla Stan, still bearing the evidence of Stockholm's early days.

There is a reason why 20 percent of Swedes call the 'Venice of the North' home. World-class restaurants perfecting iconic Swedish cuisine compete with French and Italian masters for picky diners. Cutting-edge fashion houses that appear regularly on the world's catwalks share space next to Swedish high-street brands. And the rich history embodied in the most iconic buildings offers a stunning backdrop for this thriving, modern city.

The city is divided into equal parts water, parks and buildings, making it a nature lover's paradise. The seemingly endless summer nights allow inhabitants to indulge in their passions for exercise and revelry, while the characteristic arctic chill in the darker months sees residents cross-country skiing and ice skating in the frozen city. No matter the season, Stockholm's cosmopolitan and friendly attitude issues a welcome invitation to all.
