Shanghai

Welcome to Shanghai

Shanghai is an ever-changing mega-metropolis that after years of rapid transformation still has its foot on the accelerator, hurtling towards the future with spine-tingling exhilaration. It is the powerhouse of the world’s most dynamic country.

Modern Shanghai is a glamorous and sophisticated city with spectacular museums and theatres; a place where tree-lined boulevards rub shoulders with futuristic skyscrapers and upscale shopping malls. Although the best of old Shanghai is never far away, with its classical gardens, ancient temples and lively street markets.

The city has long shed its infamous past as a playground of vagabonds and chancers, where prostitutes and hoodlums frequented rowdy nightclubs, and opium dens and debauchery dripped from every doorstep. When the communists came to power in 1949, Shanghai was cleaned up in an instant.

Millions of dollars are being poured into the city as its open policy attracts many foreign companies and investors and consequently thousands of expatriates are making Shanghai their home. The population is fast moving and going places as those that work hard like to play hard. Far away from Beijing’s prying eyes, they are enjoying the freedom of China’s most cosmopolitan city.
